MaineHousing and partners plan Fair Housing workshops

-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 29, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Two workshops providing landlords with information on the federal Fair Housing Act and the Maine Human Rights Act are scheduled for April in Augusta and Westbrook.

MaineHousing has joined with Pine Tree Legal Assistance, The Maine Human Rights Commission, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to conduct the workshops, which will provide landlords, rental property owners or managers with current information regarding their rights and responsibilities, supplemented with realistic examples of rental housing situations.
Workshops are scheduled for:

Housing workshops in Social Media

April 25, 9 a.m.-noon (registration at 8:30 a.m.), Westbrook Housing Authority conference room, 3 Liza Harmon Drive, Westbrook.

April 30, 9 a.m.-noon (registration at 8:30), Augusta City Center lecture hall, 16 Cony Street, Augusta.

Space is limited. Pre-registration is required and can be done online at www.regonline.com/2013LandlordWorkshop.

“Landlords understand how important Fair Housing practices are to their business,” said Debbie King-Johnson, MaineHousing consumer education and outreach officer. “Many landlords, however, are finding it difficult to stay current on the laws that prohibit discrimination in housing. These workshops will bring property owners and landlords up-to-date on the laws, and teach them how to identify potential problem situations and prevent violations.”

Topics include:

Landlord, owner and property manager responsibilities under the Federal Fair Housing Act and the Maine Human Rights Act;
Which properties are covered by the fair housing laws;
What are considered unlawful activities under federal and state laws;
Issues involving service animals, victims of domestic violence, sexual orientation, sexual harassment, reasonable accommodations, Housing Choice vouchers, and advertising;
How claims of discrimination are investigated.
