MaineHousing has joined with Pine Tree Legal Assistance, The Maine Human Rights Commission, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to conduct the workshops, which will provide landlords, rental property owners or managers with current information regarding their rights and responsibilities, supplemented with realistic examples of rental housing situations.

The workshop will originate at the University of Maine at Orono and be transmitted live via videoconference at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. It runs from 1-4 p.m. in room 105 of the Donald P. Corbett Business Building at the University of Maine at Orono and at the same time by videoconference to attendees in the library conference room at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 181 Main Street. Check in begins at 12:30 p.m. at both sites.

Space is limited. Pre-registration is required and can be done online at https://www.regonline.com/CalendarNET/EventCalendar.aspx?EventID=1232090&view=Day

“Landlords understand how important Fair Housing practices are to their business,” said Debbie King-Johnson, MaineHousing consumer education and outreach officer. “Many landlords, however, are finding it difficult to stay current on the laws that prohibit discrimination in housing. These workshops will bring property owners and landlords up-to-date on the laws, and teach them how to identify potential problem situations and prevent violations.”

Topics include:

Landlord, owner and property manager responsibilities under the Federal Fair Housing Act and the Maine Human Rights Act;
Which properties are covered by the fair housing laws;
What are considered unlawful activities under federal and state laws;
Issues involving service animals, victims of domestic violence, sexual orientation, sexual harassment, reasonable accommodations, Housing Choice vouchers, and advertising;
How claims of discrimination are investigated.
