Homeowners property tax refund

-

The program to apply for refunds of property tax assessed and/or rent paid during 2006 begins August 1, 2007.

Maine’s FastFile methods are the quickest and most accurate way of filing your Property Tax and Rent Refund Application. FastFile saves taxpayers money because FastFile applications are less expensive to process than paper applications.

Maine Revenue Services –  Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Application
For Property Tax Assessed in 2006 and Rent Paid during 2006

I-file makes filing your Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Application easy and convenient. It is a simple, error-free way to apply, eliminating the use of paper forms.

I-file does not calculate your refund. If you qualify for a property tax or rent refund, the amount you receive will be computed when your application is processed by Maine Revenue Services. You may check on the status of your refund on the Maine Revenue Services Tax and Rent Refund Program web page after you have I-filed your application. Please wait two full business days before checking the status.

DO NOT I-FILE YOUR APPLICATION IF:

  • You used your home or apartment for business purposes in 2006.
  • Your home is partly owned by others and you can prove that you are legally required to pay all the property tax.

Instead you will need to file a paper application (available at the Maine Revenue Services Property Tax and Rent Refund Program web page) including documentation supporting your claim. For more information, see the booklet instructions for line 1e and line 4 of the paper application.

Filing Deadline: Your Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Application must be filed by June 2, 2008.
Do not apply more than once between August 1, 2007 and June 2, 2008.

Note: Applicants may be asked to provide supporting documents before a refund is issued.

Once you enter the requested data, the application will total the remaining information. You can print your completed application at the end of the I-file program.
The information you enter on each page will be saved after clicking the [Submit] button at the end of each page. If you do not click the [Submit] button, the data will not be saved.
You can find additional program information and download a paper application from the Maine Revenue Services Property Tax and Rent Refund Program web page.
If you experience any problems, please call Maine Revenue Services at (207) 626-8475.
